McKinney-Vento

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures educational stability and access for children and youth experiencing homelessness. Enacted in 1987 and reauthorized under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015, McKinney-Vento defines homelessness broadly to include children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes those living in shelters, motels, cars, campgrounds, or temporarily doubled-up with others due to loss of housing or economic hardship. The law requires every school district to designate a Homeless Liaison to identify and support students in homeless situations and ensure they are enrolled, attend school, and have full access to educational opportunities.
