Statement from the Orange City School District Board of Education
Thank you to the community members who spoke at our most recent board meeting and sent emails. Thank you for expressing your concern, your disappointment, and your anger. People need to be seen and heard, and you were. Speaking out is the first step in a journey we will take together.
We heard you. Your voices matter to us, and we are listening.
Our community has long been sustained by shared values of equality, respect, and fellowship. This is who we are. We have the responsibility to provide a safe, supportive and tranquil learning environment for all our students. Our school district is committed to the No Place for Hate® initiative and to being a place where hate has no home. On behalf of the five members of the Board, our superintendent, and district leadership, we unequivocally condemn hate, racism, antisemitism, and discrimination in any form against any person or group. This stands without qualification. We reject the hateful content represented in the recent Facebook posts. The views expressed do not reflect the values or positions of the Board, District, or community.
We are committed to protecting and nurturing our community of learners, teachers, families, and staff. In addition to the steps Dr. Campbell recommended in his May 11, 2026 message, we are moving forward now with a focused effort. With guidance from outside experts and community partners, we will launch an ongoing campaign to reaffirm respect, safety, and empathy across our schools and neighborhoods.
While our district already provides many supports, those protections must be strengthened to meet new and evolving challenges to our community norms. We will examine board policies, reinforce behavioral expectations, expand educational programming and materials, and create regular opportunities for respectful conversation and restorative practices. We will determine the best path forward in supporting students who may feel uncomfortable in their learning environment as a result of the Facebook posts. This is the work ahead for all of us.
As public servants, we will be as transparent as possible about our process and our progress. We do not yet have every detail finalized, but we will discuss concrete steps and timelines during upcoming board meetings as they are developed and will invite community input at each stage.
There is no simple answer and no shortcut. We must do the work — together.
Sincerely,
The Board of Education
